I get the kookiest email.

From: "Loretta User" <LUSER@employer.dom>
Subject: Addition
Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 12:41:55 -0500
To: <root@ftp.employer.dom>

Hello

Can you please add my name to the distribution list asap? Thank you.

luser@employer.dom

Loretta User
Senior Account Manager
XXX-YYY-ZZZZ
Fax PPP-QQQ-RRRR
luser@employer.dom
That's it. That's all.

No mention of which distribution list, what's distributed via it, not even who is, at present, a member. No clues to go on.

Perhaps "Loretta" assumes that there exists some single platonically ideal distribution list, and all she needs to get ahead in the dog-eat-dog world of Senior Account Management is to get herself added to it?

(Okay, so really, this is that our FTP server runs NcFTPd, which sends out notifications to various internal users when clients upload files. But we've got like fifty of those notifications. I doubt "Loretta" wants to be on all of them...)

Put her on all of them anyway. Just to make sure you got her on the right one. Then when she writes back to complain, speak only Hindu.

Nah, emailing "you'll have to tell me what you mean more specifically" back is less work.

And I don't have to go figure out if babblefish has a Hindi translator.

I like how not only does she send the request from her ( ASSuming ) company email account, she has to list the address that she wants added to the distro list as well AND note the address in her signature. I bet that in her infinite wisdom, she's set her REPLY-TO to LUSER@company.dom as well ( y'know, just for good measure... ). Kinda like those folks that wear a belt and suspenders....

I'm disinclined to discourage her from giving me too much information at this point...

Look at it this way, she didn't say WHICH notification list to put her on. So, find the raunchiest "in your inbox" porn site you can, and sign her up. She'll be notified of everytime there are hot, willing, teenage sluts available for chat, cam, etc.

Considering the last developer they fired did that to every woman in HR and his former manager exactly the day his severance ran out, I'd have to consider that one "taken". I'm not so into repeating pranks...
